Muskingum County Democrats heard from speakers while sharing ideas and ice cream Sunday.

The Muskingum Area Women’s Democratic club hosted an ice cream social at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Among the speakers was Sharen Neuhardt, candidate for Ohio Lieutenant Governor, running on the ticket with Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald. While jobs numbers may have improved in recent years under Gov. John Kasich, Neuhardt said that simply isn’t enough.

"Are we doing better now than what we were doing in the depths of 2009? Yes, of course," Neuhardt said. "But, in terms of a recovery that benefits all of Ohio, clearly not. He (Gov. Kasich) has balanced the Ohio state budget on the backs of working people."

Fitzgerald and Neuhardt currently trail their Republican opponents in many of the polls, but Neuhardt said she’s confident the numbers will start to swing in their direction as they continue to travel the state getting their message out to voters.

Also speaking was Natalie Haupt, candidate for the 5th District Court of Appeals. She’s hoping her experience will resonate with voters.

"I began my legal career as a public defender, assistant public defender, representing indigent clients in all phases of criminal representation," Haupt said. "For the past 11 years, I’ve served as a magistrate in the Stark County Court of Common Pleas general division which is the catch-all court for a variety of cases. It is that breadth of experience that I think makes me the best qualified candidate."

Nina Turner was also scheduled to address the crowd. She will face off against Republican incumbant Jon Husted this fall for Ohio Secretary of State.
