The Newton Township Fire Chief is warning residents about a phone scam.
Chief Allen Deaver says an elderly woman was contacted Tuesday by someone asking for money for the Newton Township Fire Department.
The caller asked the woman for her bank account information which she gave to the person.
Deaver says his department is not soliciting funds over the phone.
He says he also received a call from someone saying they were collecting money for a fire relief fund to help fire victims and grants for firefighter training.
He can’t say if the caller is the same person who contacted the elderly woman . But when he asked how he could go about applying for the grant the caller didn’t have an answer.
Chief Deaver says if someone wants to make a donation to their local fire department they should do so directly.
