A long time employee of the Zanesville Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce is retiring.
Information Coordinator Shirley McCallister began working on August 15th of 1985 at the Tourist Bureau which then joined the Chamber of Commerce. Mccallister took Lorena Sternwheeler Reservations, handled tourist information and contracts for the shows that came into Secrest Auditorium. She says in her 29 years of work, some of her career highlights included going to travel shows, promoting Zanesville and giving directions.
"It’s just when somebody comes in and you give them directions and information and I always have a little story to go with it because being from here in Zanesville I like to add that little bit of story. But when they say to you, ‘thank you so much, your directions were great’ so that makes you feel good when you have done that."
Mccallister says that she feels very blessed to have worked for the chamber of commerce for so many years and promoting the city is among the things she will miss the most.
"Probably meeting the tourists. But again the staff here, we share a lot of things but I think the people coming in and me getting to know them and going home and telling my family, ‘guess what happened today’. Thats what I’ll miss the most is promoting. "
Mccallister says that she still wants to stay involved with the Chamber and plans on doing volunteer work with all of her time off.
