Two separate single car accidents occurred within miles of each other on Interstate 70 eastbound Sunday afternoon just east of Zanesville.

Sgt. Melanie Appleman with the Zanesville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said they received a call at 3:47 p.m. of a single car rollover accident with injuries. The accident occurred near the rest area on I-70 east of Zanesville when the female driver lost control of her Toyota minivan.

"From what we can put together, she may have fell asleep," Sgt. Appleman said. "She drove off the left side of the road, overcorrected, brought it back onto the road and still couldn’t get it under control, went through the median and overturned a couple of times before coming to rest here in the median."

The vehicle had four occupants, all of them from Virginia. Appleman said they were all wearing seatbelts which likely prevented the injuries from being serious. Two of the occupants were transported by Perry Township squad to Good Samaritan Hospital for what Appleman described as only minor injuries.

Later on Sunday evening, just two miles from the previous accident, another single car accident occurred–this one near mile marker 161 on Interstate 70 eastbound. The Highway Patrol said a Honda CRV driven by by Justin Berman of Pennsylvania was traveling eastbound around 7:30 p.m. when the car hydroplaned causing it to lose control.

The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and into an embankment. There were no injuries. The Highway Patrol suspects both speed and the weather to be factors in the crash.
