WHIZ Fitness Challenge: Step Sculpt

This week in our WHIZ/Muskingum Recreation Center I’m happy to report that the staff here on broadcast hill has lost over one hundred pounds with about a month to go.

As we prepare to push towards the finish I decided to tackle an obstacle that held me back during our initial fitness assessment: the step test. So, to get some practice and challenge myself I signed up for the Rec Center’s Step Sculpt Class.

When I heard the music we were going to move to I should have run for the exit. But, the first half of the class I held my own lifting weights and doing sit-ups.

"It combines a cardiovascular exercise like step aerobics, but it’s also strengthening your muscles with weights. Sometimes we use bands and we also work a lot on abdominal exercises to kind of strengthen the core," said Step Sculpt Instructor Teresa Bell.

My confidence took a hit though when we moved to the step portion. I stumbled. I couldn’t follow the choreography and I looked like a complete mess.

"We all start somewhere," said Bell offering some encouragement. "When I started taking step aerobics for the first time I didn’t do a very good job. I just kind of fumbled and did as much as I could. There’s some basic steps you can always go back to so that you can keep moving, if the choreography gets a little too tricky."

I pushed through the class with a little help from the music.

"It helps you do the counting," explained Bell. "If you can’t count and keep the steps in your mind, you can at least just listen to the music and go through the steps.

And with a little encouragement from the class and a fun instructor we all reached the finish line.

"When I fumble or if I don’t know what I’m doing it’s fun because we’re all in the same boat together. I don’t see it as a kind of division among us. I like that it’s fun," said Bell.

I agree it was fun and challenging…bring on that step test.
