The trauma center at the Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital has received a three year reverification.

Genesis began the trauma center in 2010 before receiving their official verification in 2011.  The Verification Review Committee of the American College of Surgeons recently renewed Genesis as a level three trauma center.

"They look through charts, they see our facility, they talk to multiple disciplines that are involved with trauma to make sure that all of our t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted," said Brandice Alexaner, assistant trauma medical director for Genesis.  "We came through with flying colors.  They said that we are functioning as a very high functioning level three."

While the most severe injuries may still need to go to a level one trauma center in Columbus, Alexander said having a level three center right here in Zanesville is very beneficial to area residents to be able to get the care they need without having to be life-flighted to a larger city.

"Now, we’re able to keep all of those patients here at home. They don’t have to go to the big city of Columbus, and their family doesn’t have to travel.  We’ve had just overwhelming community support as well as physician and staff support from the hospital."

Alexander said the center treated over 1,000 patients last year.  Upgrading to a level one or two is also potentially in the plans once they are moved into the new hospital.
