“Lace Up For Kids” Hands Out Shoes

Many kids plan their first day of school outfit weeks in advance, and with any good outfit it starts with the shoes.

Eastside Community Ministries along with Wendy’s and WHIZ worked together Thursday afternoon through "Lace Up for Kids" to make sure that every child received a new pair of shoes for school. Co-chair Sue Thuma talked about how important an event like this is for the community.

"I think it’s huge, it’s huge for the community. We’re able to help a lot of families. We have a lot of grandparents that are raising grandkids and they are doing it on social security. So these people need to have help because going back to school is an expensive proposition. And shoes are not getting any cheaper. "

1,700 pairs of shoes were collected over the course of the year to fit the 1,100 students who signed up. With the help of volunteers each child left the event today with a pair of shoes and socks.

"Couldn’t do it without volunteers, and we have some fantastic volunteers. This is a perfect example of ‘it takes a village,’ between the people who donate money, the people who donate shoes, the people who come in and volunteer. I mean its and amazing, amazing community outpouring. "

The "Lace Up for Kids’ event was held Thursday afternoon at the Civic League Community center from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
