Plan Ahead for Holiday Travel

If you’re planning a Labor Day getaway you’ll be in good company.

Triple A predicts that 34.7 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday weekend, most of them on the roads. That would be 1.3 percent more weekend travelers than last year.

State Patrol Troopers will share the roadway with those traveling as you can expect to see an increase in patrols. Even minor violations can lead to major problems.

"Sometimes we stop people for what would appear to be a minor violate and we find a vehicle that’s unsafe to be on the roadway," explained Zanesville Post Commander for the Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Matt Boyd. "We may find someone that’s an impaired driver or get into drugs or some sort of felony case or something like that."

Lt. Boyd said while your allowing more time for travel, obeying the traffic laws and wearing your seatbelts, you should also drive defensively.

"Even though you may be obeying all the traffic laws you can prevent a crash that may have happened and not been your fault by driving defensively," said Lt. Boyd. "Seeing another driver is not paying attention, not obeying the laws or is driving aggressively or recklessly."

The patrol said if you see someone driving recklessly contact your local police, sheriff or patrol post. You can also call #677 to get in touch with State Troopers.

As a reminder if you see the patrol pulled over with a vehicle or other safety equipment on the side of the road it is state law to change lanes or slow down.
