You can’t build a house without a hammer and nails, just like a child can’t learn without the appropriate "Tools for School".

Tuesday afternoon volunteers from Eastside Community Ministry met at the Zanesville Middle School to help pack bags with school supplies, donated through the "Stuff the Bus" program. Many of these volunteers, including Arlow Barclay, come back year after year to help out.

"The kids need this, the supplies for school, and its just a good feeling to do it, " said Barclay.

The program provides school supplies to children in Muskingum County as well as some children in Morgan County. Co-Chair Betsy Thomas said that the program is like a well oiled machine at this point, running for the past twelve years.

"This is the first day, we’ll pack for two shifts. Then tomorrow we’ll pack three shifts, and we will pack a total of 850 backpacks," said Thomas.

Volunteers not only play an important role in packing the bags. They help hand them out as well, passing out the bags to kids in kindergarten all the way up to twelfth grade.

"We have volunteers, that’ll come and the participants pull in with their car and have their number on their card, their application on a card. They give that to a runner, the runner comes in and gets the appropriate backpacks that have the same number and bring it out to the car. " Said Betsy Thomas.

The backpacks will be distributed this Thursday, August 7th from 8:30a.m. to 11a.m. at the Zanesville Middle School.
