Over 1,000 area kids will soon be sporting a new pair of shoes.

It’s all a part of the annual "Lace Up for Kids" program. Now that all the shoes have been collected, Wednesday began the preparations for the big giveaway.

"Today is our big moving day," said Sally Goins with Eastside Community Ministries. "We are moving in 1,700 pairs of shoes, and tomorrow, starting at nine o’clock in the morning, we have 1,200, almost, kids signed up to come and try on those shoes and take a new pair for the back to school."

Eastside Community Ministries, Wendy’s and WHIZ partnered together for the 26th annual event to help get the donations. Wednesday, football players from Zanesville High School helped unload and sort all the shoes.

"We’ve done it in past years where we’ve passed out shoes, helped unload / load it," said team captain Ace Shryock.  "It’s giving back to the community that helps us out a lot."

The shoes will be distributed Thursday at the Civic League Community Center by appointment only. Goins said all the donations came from community members as well as few local banks. The shoes will go to children who attend Muskingum County Schools.
