Many colors covered the sidewalk at the Larry Miller Intermediate School Saturday.
the colors were apart of East Muskingum’s 25th annual Chalk on the Walk event. The event allowed kids from pre-k to 8th grade to compete in a sidewalk chalk drawing contest. Around 150 kids participated. The school’s principal, Mike House, said it’s amazing what some of the kids can draw.
"The kids really enjoy it," House said. "It gets their parents involved and we have a lot of variety of drawings, again with the different grade levels, from cartoon characters to animals to just whatever they want. I think the kids enjoy that, and it makes them happy."
The kids competed for awards in three different age groups. Prizes included art supplies, football tickets and a gift certificate to Wal-Mart. The prizes were provided by the East Muskingum Endowment Fund. House said that East Muskingum is very good about supporting the arts, and he feels it’s important to the community to have that support. The artists were allowed to draw whatever they wanted as long as it stayed inside the square provided to them.
"I think it’s been a great day," House said. "We’ve had good participation and we look forward to doing it again next year."
Although the event was Saturday morning the chalk art will still be on the sidewalks outside Larry Miller Intermediate School until it wears away.
