Laughter and the smell of home cooked chicken filled the air at the Newton Township Fire Department Sunday.
The Newton Township Fire Department hosted it’s annual chicken dinner at eleven today. The dinner is the fire department’s largest fundraiser. Fire Chief Allen Deaver said they will usually raise between $3,000 and $4,000 each year. Raising money may be the main goal of the dinner, but Deaver said they also want to spend more time with community members. That’s why there was also a car show and vendors from around the area at the station Sunday.
"We see more people, plus it gives a reason to hand around for a little bit instead of just coming in picking up your chicken and heading home," Deaver said.
Deaver added they ran out of meals around 2 p.m. But he said that they were going to stay out there as long as people wanted to hang around.
"It’s great to see everybody and get to talk to people when we’re not on a run or doing something else and have them come through and everybody seems to love the chicken," Deaver said. "We enjoy seeing them and having them in the fire house."
This was the 31st annual chicken dinner hosted by the Newton Township Fire Department and Chief Deaver said they don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
