Zanesville Municipal Court Judge William Joseph met with County Commissioners Thursday.
The idea of consolidating the Zanesville Municipal Court with the Muskingum County Court has been an ongoing discussion for several months now. Judge Joseph says while many other counties consolidate courts, he feels that two court systems are needed to keep up with the flow of cases.
"There are counties that have a single court for the whole county, there are many counties that have both. Both systems work. I think the real con in this particular case is that neither the county court or the municipal court is large enough to handle the entire county so you’d have to build a new courtroom at an estimated cost of 2.5 to 3 million dollars "
County Commissioners explained that they don’t see the need to have two separate courtrooms. Joseph feels it is a better service to the community to keep the two apart.
"Our court is run efficiently and we have no budgetary problems. The county doesn’t have any budgetary problems. I’m not sure why anyone would want to spend 3 million dollars to build a new courtroom to do what’s being done now in two separate courtrooms very well."
No conclusion was reached on the issue, but both sides feel that the formation of a committee to discuss the topic would be a good idea.
