A popular shortcut past Maple Avenue is now closed to through traffic.
Center Drive is decades old and the wear and tear that has developed over the past couple of years is now showing very prominently. We stopped by City Hall and spoke to Public Service Director who told us its a much larger issue than potholes alone.
"There’s a failure of the base. Theres a failure of the way it was constructed. The street is tilted inward, versus crowed and taking storm water out. So over the years and over the years as traffic increased on that through residential neighborhoods–the use of it. It’s just the base has failed."
Bennett says the road was initially designed for small residential cars and no one realizing how much traffic the road would actually receive years later. Freezing and thawing of the winter seasons has helped create potholes and broken pavement. Bennett says right now the temporary solution is to detour through traffic. Hot mix will be applied in the warm months, but Bennett says a permanent solution is yet to come.
"The City Engineer is working on looking at evaluation of cost and options to completely to look at what its going to take to reconstruct it to 2015 to 2020, 2030 standards.’"
Bennett says no payment solution or time frame has been decided upon as of yet. If you come across Center Drive and don’t live in the area, it is best to find an alternate route until repairs can be made.
