According to the American Cancer Society there are 14.5 million cancer survivors in the United States. Local survivors celebrated National Cancer Survivors day with the annual Celebrate Life event.
The day featured food and a Blues Brothers show. Cancer survivors were invited to come and celebrate their victory together. They got the chance to get their photo taken with loved ones and all survivors left with flowers. Director of Cancer Services Sharon Parker said survivors deserve a day to revel in their success.
"We find it very important to give them an opportunity to really come out and celebrate," said Parker. "We encourage them to bring family, friends, just any loved ones with them to take that time to really enjoy with family."
This marks the first year that the event was held in front of the new Genesis Cancer Care Center in Zanesville. The facility has been opened and functional since January. Parker said it has already been an asset in the community.
"We’ve been here about five months and just been a great environment," said Parker. "We’ve pulled all of our services into one building so it’s very patient sentry. "
The event took place from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
