ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Labrador retriever has been named the most popular dog breed for the 25th year in a row. That had us wondering about the popular breeds here locally.

Wednesday, we stopped by the Animal Shelter in Muskingum County to see which dog is the most adopted dog here in our county.

“Here at the shelter the dogs that get the most interest are the puppies. It really doesn’t matter what breed. Puppies just seem to have knack of tugging on people’s hearts. People can train and teach puppies and model their behavior. Any kind of puppies here are adopted very quickly,” said Executive Director Jody Murray.

Murray said it’s rare for the shelter to have a pure bread dog. The most adopted dog is a lab mixed. Murray said there are some keys things to keep in mind when considering adoption .

“The important thing is you want to make sure that you’re looking at characteristics in the dog that match what your needs are. If you want a lap dog you going to want to come in a find dogs that are small and friendly. You have to consider if you get a young dog, you maybe looking at a life expectancy of 10-15 years. That’s a long term commitment. So you want to make sure that’s a good fit,” said Murray.

Murray said you should take several days to spend time with the dog before making a decision to take it home.
