NEW STRAITSVILLE, Oh – Moonshining runs deep in the blood of some New Straitsville residents, at least that is what one local man said.
Doug Nutter is the Co-Owner for ‘Straitsville Special Moonshine Distillery,’ a locally owned business which also operates a moonshine still booth at the ‘Moonshine Festival’ in New Straitsville.
"The governor changed the law in 2012 to where he took the population out of the law that enabled us to open up a distillery, anybody can open up a distillery in Perry County. So I opened up the first moonshine distillery in Ohio and it’s right across the street. I opened up in 2014, one day before the Moonshine Festival and we’re open year around, Monday through Saturday," said Nutter.
Nutter said it has always been a dream of his to own a moonshine distillery and told us none of it could be possible without the support from his friends, family as well as the community.
"It was an historical day when I was able to actually sell the first bottle of moonshine during the Moonshine Festival. When I was younger that was my dream, I wanted to sell moonshine during the Moonshine Festival and it’s very satisfying to know I got it done," said Nutter.
Nutter said his moonshine is on sell in 54 different state stores including Krogers, Giant Eagle and general liquor stores.
