ZANESVILLE, Ohio – When the Memorial Golf Tournament in Dublin tees off next Thursday, one of the golfers will have a connection to Zanesville. Justin Thomas turned pro in 2013 and has two professional wins under his belt. Thomas’ grandfather worked as the PGA pro for 27 years at the Zanesville Country Club. Now the country club will be honoring Thomas by selling hats with his name on them in preparation for the “Battle of the B’s,” annual golf tournament.
The tournament pairs Bishop Rosecrans supporters against Blue Devil fans in a Ryder Cup format. Mike Durant, who is the golf pro at the country club, says all the money raised will help support both high schools’ golf teams.
“Proceeds from playing in the event and hats sold help the golf teams,” said Durant. “We have a silent auction and some other things that we do to raise money to go to the school golf programs. With golf balls, golf bags, team shirts, and whatever supplies they need.”
The tournament is open to anyone regardless if they went to either of the high schools or not. However, anyone who goes out for the Rosecrans team will receive a red Justin Thomas hat. Anyone on Team ZHS will get a blue one. Neutral colored white hats are for sale to the public for $30 at the pro shop. The hats will have Thomas’ personal signature embroidered on the side. Durant encourages anyone who purchases a hat to take it to the Memorial Tournament and try to get Thomas to sign it.
This is the fifth annual tournament and Durant issued a challenge to ZHS golfers.
“Rosecrans is 4-0. So all you Blue Devils out there, we need you to come out with guns blazing because it’s a rivalry and rivalries get better when it’s even. So we need Zanesville to rattle off about four in a row,” said Durant.
The tournament is July 25 at the Zanesville Country Club. To register for the event you can call (740) 452-1563.
