MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Brady Gustafson passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more — all in the second half — and Montana beat St. Francis 41-31 on Saturday night.
Gustafson finished 28-of-43 passing for 353 yards and added 29 yards rushing.
The Montana (1-0) defense limited the Red Flash to just 135 total yards in the second half — 73 of which came on a touchdown pass from Zack Drayer to Junior Ajayi with the game out of reach.
Gustafson’s first score, a 12-yard run, put the Grizzlies up 13-10 with 11:44 left in the third quarter. Lorenzo Jerome’s 86-yard return of the ensuing kickoff set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Drayer that put St. Francis (0-1) up four, but Gustafson threw TD passes of 11, 16 and 75 yards to give Montana a 34-17 lead with 7:07 to play.
Jerome added a 79-yard kickoff return for a score 14 seconds later, but the Grizzlies answered with a 10-play, 70-yard drive capped by Gustafson’s 1-yard touchdown run with 2:32 left.
Jerome finished with 196 yards and a score on four kickoff returns, 41 yards on two punt returns and two interceptions.
