Flags at half-staff for Ohio trooper fatally hit by driver

by Associated Press on September 21, 2016

LORAIN, Ohio (AP) — Ohio’s governor has ordered that flags be flown at half-staff to honor a state trooper who was struck and killed on a Cleveland interstate.

Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) ordered that flags fly at half-staff at public properties in Lorain County on Wednesday and throughout the state on Thursday to honor Trooper Kenneth Velez.

Calling hours for Velez are planned Wednesday afternoon and evening at Lorain County Community College. The State Highway Patrol says the private funeral service will be held there Thursday.

Authorities allege a man driving under the influence of drugs hit the 48-year-old Velez last week on Interstate 90 while he was conducting traffic enforcement.

The 37-year-old driver has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and was jailed, with bond set at $500,000.
