Muskingum University hosted a special guest on Wednesday in honor of their most accomplished alum.
There aren’t many people who can say they’ve seen the same sights as John Glenn, let alone stood beside him while doing so. But, Dr. Scott Parazynski can proudly say both.
“I had the good fortune of flying with John on STS 95 when he was 77 years of age and I was there to be on his crew with him,” said Dr. Parazynski John Glenn’s crew mate and physician.
John Glenn was more than just a hometown hero for New Concord and the state of Ohio. He was a nationally recognized American icon. That’s why his personal physician from his second flight to space came to Muskingum University to speak at his Alma mater
“Well you know I have so many phenomenal memories of sharing outer space with John, I had to pinch myself a few times being there floating in space looking at planet earth and right next to me is the guy that opened up the doors for all of us my crew mates and I were all standing on his shoulders he made it possible for this day,” added Dr. Parazynski
Dr. Parazynski’s list of accomplishments includes his work as an astronaut, physician and summiting Mount Everest. But, the one that Muskingum University was most concerned about was his work with New Concord’s favorite son.
“I think John certainly demonstrated the fact that a small town boy can achieve big world success and astronomical success. What he learned here in this small town and this wonderful university set him up to do extraordinary things,” said Dr. Parazynski.
His address was the first for a new lecture series at Muskingum University established to honor the ever present memory of John Glenn.
“I’ll never forget him. And I don’t think the world will ever forget him either,” said Dr. Parazynski.
