ZANEVILLE, Ohio – It was almost five years ago that Maysville wrestling coach Shawn Connors’ son, Gable, took his own life. Now Shawn is trying to turn that tragic event into something to help others.

Last year he started the Pin Suicide Gable Connors Memorial Scholarship Wrestling Tournament. It features wrestlers from all ages and will have speakers who have gone through the pain of losing a loved one to suicide.

“If one kid is impacted then it was worth it. It’s something that people don’t understand unless they go through it,” said Connors.

The wrestling tournament is July 29 at Maysville High School. In addition to wrestling, college scholarships will also be handed out.

At last year’s tournament about 200 wrestlers competed in seven different age divisions. This year Connors hopes to surpass that total.

“It was a great tournament for us, especially doing it late in the year. We had some great wrestling from kindergarten and up. There we’re numerous state qualifiers,” said Connors.
