NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Week four of the high school football season was only nine weeks ago, but it might as well be last season.
It was in week four that a 3-0 John Glenn team went down to Duncan Falls and was handed their first loss of the season, getting beat by Philo 28-17. Now the long time MVL foes will meet up again in week 13 with a lot more on the line. The winner will keep their season alive and move on to the state final four.
For third year Little Muskie head coach Matt Edwards, this is the opportunity his team has wanted all season.
“First of all I’m happy for our league. I’m happy for coach Lincicome, and coach Buttermore. At this point in the season to have three MVL teams still alive is huge for this area. We had talked after week four after we went up to their place and they came away with the “W,” that it’d be nice to see them again. Never could of imagined that it would be in a regional final,” said Edwards.
Both teams have improved in more ways than one since that first matchup. Philo finished the regular season 7-3. They’ve won their first two playoff games against St. Clairsville and Indian Valley by 18 and 28 points, respectively.
In the first matchup Philo’s front seven was able to get pressure on senior quarterback Justin Heacock. That pleasure was partially responsible for why Philo was able to intercept the Little Muskies four times on the night.
Edwards thinks that since that loss his line has stepped up and improved more than any unit on the team.
“I think our offensive has gotten a lot better and our running game has improved. Shane Bonner over the last month of the season has been a special kid. And defensively we’ve continued to get after them and special teams has had big plays over the last few weeks. The biggest thing is we’ve come out and got quick starts. Week 11 we had a quick start and week 12 we got out to a quick start. We’re looking to do the same thing this week,” said Edwards.
The winner of Friday’s game will move on to play the winner of the Clinton-Massie vs. Wyoming game in the DIV state semi final.
Friday’s kickoff between the Little Muskies and the Electrics will be at 7:30 p.m. from Sulsberger Stadium. It will air on Z92 Radio.
