ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Muskingum Valley Health Center is now certified in a new program to help women who are pregnant.
MVHC has been certified as a ‘CenteringPregnancy’ program. The program allows soon to be mothers, with similar due dates, to develop long-lasting relationships with one another. ‘CenteringPregnancy’ provides women a safe and comfortable environment to ask questions and learn about what needs to be done to raise a healthy child. MVHC has been working to become a certified center
“We were just recently certified as a dedicated centering agency,” said Nurse Practitioner Kelly Wicinski. “We had a site visit. We’ve been temporary doing this for two years or close to that and they came and gave us the site visit to let us know how we were doing and usually we would expect to see a lot of things that we had to make improvements on before we would get that status and we just received notice that we are able to be dedicated as a centering agency.”
The ‘CenteringPregnancy’ program is successful because it exceeds the recommended standard of 10 prenatal visits by expanding the sessions from an hour and a half to two hours each session. MVHC said research has shown this program can result in a lower rate of cesarean birth, lower rates in labor inductions, and higher rates of breastfeeding.
“I think if you’re preventing pre-terms births, you’re drawing attention to the risk of domestic violence. If you’re drawing attention to the risk of hurting your baby by unintentional shaken baby syndrome and prevention of that, We’re doing a big favor to the community, but we’re getting babies to their full term. Where they might not be.”
