NEW CONCORD, Ohio – For the first time in almost two decades Greg Woodard will not be the head coach during a John Glenn basketball game.
This Friday the Little Muskies will start a new season and a new era. Former Woodard assistant TJ Mitchell is now in charge of the John Glenn boys basketball program.
Mitchell will have big shoes to fill. He was named the head coach in New Concord after Greg Woodard stepped down in April. He’s replacing a head coach who won 319 games and a state championship.
Mitchell said that Woodard has had a hands-off approach.
“[Greg Woodard] handed the reigns over. He’s been there if I’ve had questions but he’s enjoying retirement,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell’s first game will come against a non-league foe that John Glenn is very familiar with. The Little Muskeis will open the 2018-2019 season with the Cambridge Bobcats, a school just 12 miles down the road, who they play most seasons in non-conference play.
This John Glenn team will look much different that last year’s team that went 22-5 and made an appearance in the regional championship game.
Among the key returns are seniors Jack Williams, Josh Raley, and Matt Lowery. Juniors Evan Williams and Reece Perkins will also be key contributors.
Friday’s game will tip off from the Fish Tank at 7:30 p.m. You can listen to the game on Z92 Radio. David Kinder and Greg Mitts will have the call on Z92 Radio and streaming online at whiznews.com.
