The closing of the Akro Plant on Virginia Street in Zanesville is not a sign of hard economic times said The Muskingum County Port Authority. They also said today that the closing wasn’t a complete surprise and there were talks for a longtime. The Akro Plant, which is owned by Collins and Aikman out of Troy, Michigan manufacturing commercial floor mats. Collins and Aikman sold that segment of the company to Superior Manufacturing Group of Chicago. The Chicago Group has decided to close the six hundred thousand square foot plant, which means more than 100 people will be looking for a job. The Port Authority hopes people will be able to find jobs with Dollar General, and White Castle. The facility will begin layoffs on June 11, employees will receive seven weeks of severance pay at that time. Collins and Aikman will still own the building, the Port Authority is already working with the company to find replacement business.
