Last week Zandex Health Care received a warning from the Ohio Department of Aging on illegal price increases for residents. Recently the company increased homes in Belmont County by five dollars a day. The Department of Aging said the hike was illegal because nursing homes are not allowed to pass the cost of a recent state bed tax along to residents. Zandex responded to the accusations today saying the price increase was a combination of reasons. They said the main reason for the increase was not the bed tax, but the fact that the company is trying to increase employee wages. The company said with the shortage of nurses and other healthcare workers, it’s hard to attract qualified employees. They also said the homes haven’t had an increase for two years and after studying other comparable homes in the area, Zandex said their price of $111 a day was considerably lower. However, the company has decided to drop the rate increase. The nursing home bed tax increased from $1 a day to $3.30 a day for each bed. The government reimburses nursing homes the bed tax for Medicaid residents, but not for other residents.
