The local Red Cross is currently recruiting minorities to donate blood. The issue is sickle cell anemia, which is found mostly in African-Americans. A donation from a black donor to a black recipient makes for a closer match, so to help out, our local organization is asking for more minority blood donors. The Red Cross is always searching for minority donors, and not just African-American, but the Indian population, the Asian population and anybody who is of a minority group. Red Cross chapters everywhere do have a rare donor registration, which is a nation-wide registry for donors that have a rare antibody, a rare antigen or a rare blood type. For more information call the local chapter of the Red Cross at 452-2731.
