It was a dark day for the community of Zanesville as hundreds gathered in the downtown area for the funeral of Muskingum County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Tanner Jr. As the flag flew half staff at St. John's Lutheran Church, many people tried to fight back the tears as they prepared themselves to say goodbye to one of law enforcements finest. Law enforcement officers, firefighter and rescue workers from various counties surrounded St. John's Lutheran Church for the Deputy's final call. As the Muskingum County Sheriff's Department approached the church where their fallen brother laid, the effects of his death showed clearly. By the time the family arrived at the church for the 1PM service, St. John's was filled to capacity with mourners. But along with officers and other community members, they stood with reverance on Market and 7TH Streets. It was there that they would also hear the words of comfort spoken by St. John's pastor, Rev. Alden W. Towbermean. For some, the pain was too much to bear. For it was the final goodbye to a loved one, their brother, a friend.
