Convicted murderer John W. Byrd Jr. died this morning at a Lucasville Ohio prison by lethal injection. The 38 year old Byrd was sentenced to die for the murder of Monte Tewksbury at a suburban Cincinnati convenience store in 1983. Tewksbury was a Procter and Gamble employee who was moonlighting at the store to save money for his daughter’s education. Witnesses to the execution say Byrd was calm as he was strapped to the table were a lethal combination of drugs was pumped into his body. Byrd used his last statement to tell his family he loved them and that they fought hard. Byrd maintained he was innocent and that an accomplice, John Brewer, confessed to stabbing Tewksbury during a robbery.
