It’s summertime again, and the scorching temperatures this week are bringing uncomfortable conditions for everyone, as well as higher electric bills. Since it doesn’t look like it’s going to cool down anytime soon, American Electric Power has come up with tips for conserving energy, and some practices that can help hold down the cost of staying cool. Senior Director of Corporate Communications of AEP, Carmen Prati says keep your thermostat at 78 or 80 degrees, close your drapes, and blinds to keep out the sun and heat, turn off unnecessary lights, equipment, appliances and use appliances at night or in the evening to save energy. Using fans for proper circulation is key to keeping things cool. For those who have Central Air, changing the filter in the air conditioner every two weeks will also provide better results and lower your monthly cost. Prati also recommends setting your water heater tank temperature to 140 degrees, and keeping major appliances such as refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible.
