The Zanesville man charged in the shooting death of a 9-year-old boy appeared in Zanesville Municipal court today. 21-year-old Michael Martin III plead not guilty to reckless homicide and involuntary manslaughter charges in the shooting death of Michael Derwacter of Blue Rock Sunday evening. Martin also plead not guilty to discharging a firearm over a public roadway. Judge Bill Joseph scheduled a preliminary hearing for Martin on August 7th and his bond was set at $75,000. Martin also answered to two other charges against him, as he is accused of discharging a firearm over public roadway on July 4th and July 26th. Martin plead no contest to those charges and was sentenced by Judge Joseph. Martin got 30 days in jail and was fined 250 dollars on each count. That was the maximum sentence allowed by law for the 4th degree misdemeanors. Martin must serve the time consecutively. Meanwhile, Martin's sentancing is not done yet. His felony charges, stemming from the fatal shooting of Derwacter, will be heard before a Muskingum county grand jury on Wednesday, August 7th.
