Smokey the Bear might want you to prevent forest fires, but the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says prescribed burns are needed to burn down old vegetation to make way for new growth. Forest managers say the environmental make-up of Southeastern Ohio is much different from the western portion of the United States, where fires tend to rage out of control. But, it is that difference in environment that cals for an intervention like prescribed burning. Forest managers say they hope controlled burning helps jumpstart the forest ecosystem again. They say they're not sure whether they'll begin controlled fires in the fall or spring. Prescribed burns depend on the weather.
