Safety is often the last thing on the minds of busy people hustling through parking lots and rushing out of their homes, but law authorities say safety is something people should never forget about. A recent rash of rapes and robberies have plagued the Central and Southeastern Ohio area and local officials say they fear some Muskingum Valley residents think the crime wave is restricted to Columbus city limits. It's not. Although Ohio State University has been the site of several, recent rapes and Muskingum College was the location for a robbery, crime is not limited to campuses. Therefore, authorities encourage everyone to use common sense, daily. Always lock doors and windows. Park in well lit areas and be aware of your surroundings. Zanesville Police Department Det. Ric Roush says half the battle is awareness. Report things that seem out of the ordinary because often reports can lead to apprehensions. Roush says many small time criminals like peeping toms can evolve into harder criminals like rapists and abusers. By reporting any suspicious activity, law enforcers are a step ahead of the game.
