Black corn can be found all around the Muskingum Valley, and agricultural experts like Mark Mechling of the Ohio State University extension say the stalks are indicative of poor weather that occurred earlier this year. Local farmers' crops did not bode well in the summer drought or heavy rains that hit many areas, in early fall. Mechling says less than fruitful crops aren't helpful to the farming community, but they could rebound next year. According to Mechling, crops being planted currently should do well next spring.
