Authorities from Caldwell say a man fatally shot himself in the head Tuesday afternoon while sitting in the back of a sheriff's cruiser. Noble County Sheriff Landon Smith says 37-year-old Douglas Kay was pronounced dead at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge. He shot himself about noon with a nine millimeter pistol. Detectives approached Kay and his wife as they left a Noble County Government Building. They say he's a suspect in a burglary and arson of a home close to where he lived in Summerfield. Smith says Kay got into a fight with the detectives and was arrested for assault and resisting arrest. He was searched and handcuffed and put in a cruiser. Smith says no one knows how the gun was missed.
