Muskingum Iron and Metal has operated on the southside of Zanesville for many years. Recently the company --located on Maysville Pike --reaped the benefits of being good neighbors by being awarded a tax abatement. Executive Director of the Muskingum County/Zanesville Port Authority Larry Merry says tax abatements are authorized to help existing businesses, encourage businesses to reinvest and to stay profitable. It is a 100-percent abatement with 25-percent going back into schools and the City of Zanesville. Another abatement was pulled. The Aquilla Power Plant decided against making further investments in their local plant, so their abatement was terminated, according to Merry.
