Leaders in the state house and senate say they are waiting for details from Governor Taft about ideas he outlined in his state of the state message. Taft wants to increase taxes on tobacco and alcohol, close at least one prison and cut state agency spending. He says that if the legislature doesn’t act on his proposed spending cuts by the end of next month, he will be forced to cut state aid to schools, higher education and job programs. House Speaker Larry Householder says the Governor’s timeline is an aggressive schedule, but adds that lawmakers are up to the challenge.
