Governor Taft is expected to announce increases in the state’s gas tax today to fund need road construction. In a report issued late last year, cities, engineers and contractors recommended increasing the tax by six cents a gallon of three years. Members of the committee issuing the report on Ohio’s transportation system say they expect Taft to follow the committee’s recommendations closely. The new taxes would raise an additional 390 million dollars over three years. Taft says the state is in danger of running out of money for road construction without the extra dollars. He says many needed projects on the drawing boards won’t proceed, congestion will grow worse and unsafe roads won’t be fixed.
