The cost of crime is going up here and throughout the Country. Locally, there is a move underway for Zanesville and Muskingum County to join in the fight against crime by joining forces. Overcrowding is an issue for the city and county jails. Currently the Zanesville City Jail has a waiting list of 120 people. The County Jail is permitted to hold 180 inmates and because it’s reached its maximum capacity, eleven prisoners have been contracted out to other facilities, costing the county 60-dollars a day per person. Now the city and county are meeting to figure out a solution. Nothing is set in stone at this time, but if agreements are made several problems could be resolved. The committee plans to meet for the third time this Friday to talk about the problem.
