Governor Bob Taft says he would consider a temporary sales tax increase this year to balance the budget instead of raising cigarette and alcohol taxes. Taft says he could accept a temporary sales tax increase as long as it provided enough money to balance the budget by June 30th, the end of the state’s fiscal year. Taft has proposed increasing cigarette and alcohol taxes to raise 159 million dollars to balance the budget. He also wants to cut state funding to local government by 30 million dollars. House republicans oppose any tax increases to balance the budget.
