New Lexington officials spent their day investigating a sudden building collapse. Around 11 last night police were called to assist in a building that fell apart at 105 Main Street. Tina’s Pizza Shop occupied the downstairs portion of the building and owners Doug and Tina Spurlock used the upper part for their apartment. The Spurlock’s have owned the building for over a year and all of his family’s personal and business belongings are ruined. Spurlock says he’s happy his family is safe. Officials aren’t clear at this point what caused the collapse, or if remains could cause more damage. Officials asked neighboring stores to close this afternoon to ensure safety during the inspection. Although the collapse is under investigation, Spurlock feels the catastrophe occurred because the city put dirt against his building. He feels that when it snowed the sand expanded and caved in the basement. That caused the entire building to collapse. The investigation and clean up should take two weeks. In the meantime, the American Red Cross is helping the family.
