The F-B-I says the number of hate crimes in Ohio motivated by bigotry has return to the pre-9/11 average. Hate crimes, many against Arabs and Muslims, increased after the September eleventh, 2001, terror attacks. There were 240 hate crimes in 2000 in Ohio and the number increased to 363 in 2001. The F-B-I is still compiling figures for last year, but says the trend was back to the average before the terrorist attacks. The numbers were discussed today in Cleveland as the F-B-I and federal prosecutors announced a new effort to combat hate crimes.
