Stalkers who use their computers to menace victims would be subject to the same penalties as people who stalk physically under a bill the Ohio House passed this week. Persons who send threatening e-mails, post messages or use other electronic means and form a pattern of conduct could be prosecuted if the senate also passes the menacing by stalking law. Under Ohio law, menacing is a misdemeanor punishable by six months in jail for the first offense. A second offense or threats that involve trespassing may be punished by as much as 18 months in prison.
