Smoking is a nasty habit with serious health risks for the smokers and for people near them. In an effort to combat the unhealthy effects of cigarettes, the Zanesville Muskingum County Health Department held a seminar Tuesday to educate healthcare professionals on how to treat smokers. According to Health Education Director at the Health Department, Bonnie Kirsch, smoking is a long-term health problem that not only causes cancer and heart disease, but also hurts people around smoke. She says it’s important to educate and help the entire community. Capitol Professor Theresa Wood spoke at the seminar about her research on tobacco and tobacco cessation. She focused on how to treat patients that are smokers and want to quit, and patients who smoke that wish to continue smoking. Wood also spoke to a group of Genesis doctors Tuesday afternoon.
