Ohio customers of phone giant SBC will soon get hit with a five-dollar fee if they are late paying their bills. The public utilities commission of Ohio ruled it’s ok for SBC to charge the fee for customers whose bills are 19 days overdue. Currently, the company can only apply the fee to charges other than basic phone service. Ohio consumers’ counsel Robert Tongren whose office represents ratepayers before the commission says the late fee goes against SBC’s pledge to cap what it charges for basic phone service. SBC acquired Ameritech in 1999.
