A man who avoided trial on molestation charges five years ago remains in jail Friday after his first court appearance on new charges. 56-year-old David Burkhammer, Sr. pleaded innocent in Franklin County Common Pleas Court on three counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of kidnapping. A bond hearing is set for Tuesday. Burkhammer’s 1998 trial on charges of sex abuse was put on hold after he told Common Pleas Judge John Bessey that he was dying of cancer. Bessey says he should have had some system set up to check on Burkhammer’s condition. Burkhammer’s case went unnoticed until he was arrested twice in May. Police accuse him of fondling an 8-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy. The older trial has been opened once again and will begin July 7th.
