Zanesville residents petition council to rename an area street and bridge in honor of two historical figures. Darrel Brown, a Zanesville resident and member of the EastCentral Southeast Ohio Juneteenth Committee, proposed the renaming of State Street in honor of Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. He also proposed renaming the bridge on State Street to Malcolm X Bridge. Fourth Ward Council Member, Julie Marsh, is opposed to renaming the bridge after Malcolm X, but support the renaming of a city street. However, she feels there may be major inconveniences for residents and businesses to overcome such as changing letterhead and business cards.
As a compromise, instead of State Street – Brown agreed to petition residents on the less populated Liberty Street for the name change. Council will discuss the issue again when they meet in three weeks.
