Americans all over the U.S. are enjoying fireworks this weekend, but that doesn’t mean our furry family friends also enjoy the loud booms and bright colors. The Department of Veterinary Medicine has some tips to ensure pets remain calm and safe during holiday celebrations.
One of the best tips is to provide a carrier for the pets. A traveling carrier keeps pets out of trouble; it also provides a safe haven for the animal. Keep pets indoors during loud fireworks; if allowed to run free, they may become frightened and run away.
Keep pets away from matches, open flames and fireworks. An animal may run over to try sniff or eat a burning firework. If possible, take your pet for a walk before the fireworks. Finally, make sure your pet is wearing recent identification, in case they should get away.
