A plan that cuts funding for the Appalachian Regional Commission has been approved this week by a house subcommittee. Forty-one congressional lawmakers had asked the subcommittee’s chairman, Ohio Congressman Dave Hobson, to help them preserve funding for the commission, which helps poor people in Appalachia. Hobson is a Springfield Republican and says there wasn’t enough money in the budget to spend more on the commission. The proposed 33-point-one-million-dollar budget for the A-R-C isn’t likely to change when the full house passes its version of the energy and water bill.
